As the third winter of the war approaches, the number of Ukrainian refugees in Austria continues to grow at an alarming rate. Speaking at a press conference in parliament today, refugee coordinator Andreas Achrainer stated that “about 2,000 people are arriving in Austria every month.” This creates an urgent need for the federal government, federal states, and civil society to “come together once again” to provide assistance.

According to Achrainer, there are currently 76,000 Ukrainian refugees living in Austria, of whom fewer than half — 37,000 — are still receiving basic services. Notably, the group includes not only working-age people but also about 7,000 elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and war victims who cannot enter the labor market. The integration of these groups requires special attention.

Lisa Zuckerstätter from the organization Nachbar in Not emphasized that thanks to generous donations, 100 million euros have been raised, which can support up to 2.5 million people. “We are very proud of the people of Austria,” she said, adding that support must continue, as Ukraine is experiencing “the hardest winter since the war began.”

These figures underscore the need for sustained attention to refugee integration and assistance so that people can successfully adapt to their new environment. How the situation will develop further remains an open question.
