In recent months, Austria has been facing major changes in its labour market, and the latest statistics confirm this. In November, the country recorded an additional 31,400 unemployed, an increase of 8.9%. This brings the total to around 384,000 people actively seeking work or undergoing training through employment services. This figure is drawing attention as it signals ongoing economic difficulties.

Economy Minister Martin Kocher points to a key reason for these changes. In his view, the weakness of the global economy is having a negative impact on the Austrian labour market. As an export-oriented country, Austria feels the decline in global demand, especially from its neighbour Germany. What changes this will bring to the lives of ordinary Austrians and how it will affect businesses remains an open question.

But there is hope: many sectors, such as construction, chemicals, electrical engineering, and retail, are actively looking for workers despite the overall unemployment backdrop. However, according to the data, around 152,267 vacancies remain unfilled, indicating a real labour shortage. Kurt Egger, Secretary General of the Economic Association, warns that labour and energy costs must be reduced to improve the situation.

The situation in some sectors is particularly worrying. Retail has 25,878 vacancies, while electrical engineering and IT have 23,081. This calls for incentive measures such as benefits for workers and expanded childcare programmes. Such steps could significantly improve the labour market and make it more attractive to job seekers, offering hope for a return to economic growth in Austria.
