Without substantial measures to reduce transport demand, the electrification of the vehicle fleet is expected to double TCE consumption by 2060. Researchers warn that without additional actions — such as expanding public transport or reducing unnecessary trips — TCE emissions into urban environments could reach 15.7 tons from vehicle use and 3,073 tons from end-of-life disposal. This raises important questions about how to balance the transition to clean technologies while minimizing their negative side effects.
The key finding of the study is that the shift to low-carbon technologies requires not only decarbonization efforts but also a reduction in overall raw material demand. Scientists urge the creation of interdisciplinary projects like TeCEUS to better understand TCE emissions and their impact on human health. This would be an important step toward a safe and sustainable future not only for Austria but for the entire planet.
