Recent events in Pottenbrunn, Austria, raise important questions about social integration. A new mega-mosque, which includes an educational center, is causing concern among local politicians, particularly representatives of the FPÖ and ÖVP.

The Islamic Federation (IF) has announced its intention to open two new centers in eastern Austria, one in Pottenbrunn and another in Vienna’s Favoriten district. This initiative has attracted the attention of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which warns of potential danger from Millî Görüş, an organization known for rejecting Western cultural values and spreading antisemitic ideas.

The Directorate of State Security and Intelligence (DSN) directly points to the risk associated with Millî Görüş’s activities, noting that the organization deliberately denies the achievements of modern science and promotes conspiracy theories.

FPÖ deputy Lisa Schuch-Gubik has voiced strong opposition to the construction plans. She argues that such a mega-mosque should not exist in Pottenbrunn and emphasizes that the educational center could lead to the formation of a parallel society. Schuch-Gubik is concerned about young people who might be drawn into alternative cultural structures that ignore traditional Austrian values.

The issue has also drawn the attention of Lower Austria’s Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, who stressed the importance of Christian values and the need to resist political Islamism. “We must place such centers under close scrutiny,” she said in a recent speech, emphasizing that religion should not be used as a tool against freedom and democracy.
