According to data provided by the SPÖ, children in Upper Austria face appalling waiting times for relatively simple surgical procedures. An operation to remove adenoids or tonsils can take up to 18 months! Furthermore, the first half of 2023 already showed that children in Linz may wait up to 52 weeks for surgery to treat serous otitis media. In other regions, waiting times of 20 to 40 weeks are equally alarming.

The main cause of the current situation is a shortage of medical staff, especially surgical nurses. Helmut Freudentaler, chairman of the works council at Kepler Clinic in Linz, noted that the staff shortage has been felt since 2017 and continues to worsen. Solving this problem requires urgent measures, such as higher wages and improved working conditions for medical personnel. In the meantime, patients must endure hidden pain and long waits while politicians search for solutions.

The Austrian healthcare system is facing a crisis that demands a systematic approach and immediate action.
