Why Austrians Aren’t Buying Electric Cars

The electric vehicle market in Austria has hit an unexpected stagnation. According to a Deloitte study, only 7% of Austrians plan to buy a fully electric car, while 57% still prefer traditional combustion engines. Despite urgent calls for climate action, many remain skeptical. Here are the key reasons behind the resistance.

Range Anxiety

The biggest barrier is range. 49% of respondents cite limited driving range as a major concern. While modern EVs have improved significantly, potential buyers still worry about reaching their destination without recharging.

High Price Tag

43% say they are not willing to spend more than €30,000 on a new car, which severely limits their options among available EVs. Rising car prices and additional charging costs make the switch even less attractive.

Charging Infrastructure Gaps

38% say installing a home charging station is not an option for them. This creates a major barrier, as many cannot reliably charge their vehicle.

Comparison with Germany

In Germany, 14% of respondents are open to buying an EV — double the Austrian rate. The gap stems not only from price but from a lack of government support.

The Way Forward

To boost EV demand, Austria needs: more charging stations in cities and along highways, more affordable models from manufacturers, and government subsidies including tax breaks and purchase incentives.

Despite global trends toward electrification, Austria lags behind. Range anxiety, high costs, and insufficient infrastructure remain the main obstacles. Stronger government support and better consumer conditions are essential for change.
