Over the past weekend, Austria faced a serious problem in its national military defense. The Air Force can no longer protect its airspace because Eurofighter jets cannot take off. According to information published in Krone, the situation has profound consequences: at the country’s only airbase, not a single Eurofighter is combat-ready, allowing unknown aircraft to circle freely over Austrian airspace. Experts say interception missions occur approximately 50 times a year, and the lack of readiness of military aircraft is a serious breach.

Remarkably, this is the first time in over 50 years that Austria’s airspace has remained undefended over a weekend. Normal operations are expected to resume on Monday, but there is a risk that unknown aircraft could enter the country’s airspace in the meantime.

The aviation situation in Austria has been worsened by lengthy investigations related to corruption and irregularities in the Eurofighter procurement. These fighters, which replaced the aging Saab J35O Draken, entered service in 2007, but their construction technology was not state-of-the-art even then.

According to official information, the unplanned flight interruptions were caused by a shortage of operations personnel and退休-retirement of staff, particularly air traffic controllers and firefighters.
