Rising Bankruptcies and New Company Growth in Austria: What Is Happening?

Austria is facing a paradoxical situation: despite a sharp rise in bankruptcies across various sectors, the number of new companies continues to grow. According to recent data, over 6,500 bankruptcies were recorded in 2024, 22 percent more than the previous year. At the same time, more than 21,400 new firms were opened, 7 percent more than in 2023. This situation demands attention from both entrepreneurs and investors.

Record bankruptcies

According to a study by Acredia, bankruptcies are expected to increase by 9 percent in 2024, especially in construction, trade, and services. The main causes are low economic growth, high energy and rent costs, and geopolitical risks creating business uncertainty.

According to the Austrian Retail Association, a record 3,064 bankruptcies were registered in the first half of the year, the highest since 2018.

Resilience of new companies

Despite the difficult bankruptcy situation, interest in starting new businesses remains strong. In 2024, 21,439 new companies were registered, up 7 percent from 2023. This growth can be explained by investment attraction in startups and small businesses, increased online sales and e-commerce development, and government support programs for new enterprises.

The most notable increases in new companies were recorded in Carinthia and Upper Austria.

Economic factors driving bankruptcies include high inflation reducing real incomes and consumer spending, growing debt burdens, and geopolitical uncertainty. However, new companies often adapt better through innovative business models, digital technology use, and high flexibility in strategy adjustment.

Conclusion The Austrian economy shows contradictory trends: rising bankruptcies alongside growing numbers of new companies. This highlights the need for financial stability and innovation to survive in today’s economy. Whether in stable times or crisis, opportunities for growth and development always emerge.
