Possible Layoffs at SEAT: What It Means for Austria Under New Tariffs

New tariffs and their impact on SEAT

Since October 2023, the EU has imposed additional 20.7% tariffs on electric vehicles manufactured in China. SEAT CEO Wayne Griffiths warns these tariffs threaten the company’s financial targets and could lead to the loss of up to 1,500 jobs in Europe if the situation does not change. If tariffs remain, the company may halt sales of the Tavascan model, negatively impacting production capacity.

How this affects Austria

While no specific details about Austria are available yet, potential layoffs could affect SEAT’s local facilities. SEAT ranks third among automotive brands in Austria with 19,800 sales and a 7.8% market share. Such changes could have significant consequences for the Austrian labor market and economy.

SEAT’s growth despite challenges

In 2024, SEAT achieved 7.5% sales growth and produced 558,100 vehicles — 310,000 SEAT and 248,100 CUPRA. Electrified models accounted for 14% of CUPRA and 5.9% of SEAT sales, showing the company is on the right track with electrification.

SEAT plans to begin pre-series production of its electric small cars in 2025, but high tariffs could slow this process. The company may be forced to reduce production volumes, abandon new models like the Tavascan, and struggle to meet EU carbon standards.

On the positive side, SEAT continues to expand its charging infrastructure and works with the Spanish government on EV sales incentives through financial subsidies.
