The last Salzburg Mozartkugel rolled off the line last week, and other confectionery production will stop by December 5. The KEX Group will permanently close the factory on December 31, ending operations at a site that had been running since 1948.

The reasons are familiar to modern businesses: rising costs for raw materials, energy, packaging, and transport pushed the company into a difficult financial position. Only 65 employees remain, and they recently held a protest in hopes of reversing the decision. But the factory’s fate was sealed months ago.

What will happen to the famous Mozartkugel now? A KEX Group representative said production will likely move to Eastern Europe. This reflects new economic realities but also raises questions about the authenticity of one of Austria’s most popular delicacies.
