Karntner Heimatwerk closes after 70 years — no successor found Karntner Heimatwerk, a renowned Austrian traditional clothing business, is closing after more than 70 years due to the lack of a successor, putting Carinthian cultural heritage at risk. Topics: Daily Life, Transport.

Karntner Heimatwerk, a renowned Austrian traditional clothing business, is closing after more than 70 years of operation. The sad news comes as a result of failing to find a successor, putting the preservation of traditional costumes and Carinthia’s cultural heritage at risk.

Ewald and Elisabeth Opetnik, the owners of the company that produced and sold folk costumes for decades, have announced a clearance sale at their locations in Klagenfurt and Villach. The situation raises serious concerns about the future of Austrian culture and crafts.

Why it closed: no successor found

Since its founding in 1953, Karntner Heimatwerk has been an integral part of Carinthia’s cultural landscape. The owners began searching for a successor last year but failed to find a suitable candidate. The decline is also linked to economic difficulties and changing political environments that affected store traffic. Ewald Opetnik noted that city centers have become “difficult places” for small and medium-sized businesses, complicating the search for a successor.

Cultural significance

Karntner Heimatwerk was known for the high quality of its products, particularly folk costumes like dirndls. The company not only produced clothing but also maintained an archive of traditional costumes, which now belongs to the state of Carinthia. These products played an important role in preserving the region’s cultural heritage and shaping local identity.

The closure of Karntner Heimatwerk is not just the end of one of Austria’s oldest traditional companies — it is a serious blow to Carinthia’s cultural heritage. The question of preserving Austrian folk culture now becomes particularly urgent.
