Why Kika/Leiner closed

The company’s history was marked by ups and downs. In recent years, it faced serious problems including three ownership changes and two bankruptcy proceedings since 2013. These difficulties resulted from growing competition, economic shifts, and changing consumer preferences.

The last owner, Signa Group, could not find the funds to restore the business — the decisive factor leading to final bankruptcy.

Impact on employees

Around 1,350 people lost their jobs with Kika/Leiner’s closure. Local authorities and the Dutch government are considering establishing a fund to help dismissed workers through the crisis.

Final farewell sale

Starting January 24, remaining Kika/Leiner stores held a massive clearance sale with up to 90% discounts on all products, including display items. Most stores closed at the end of January. Customers with open orders needed to collect them before the final closing date.

Customers who made prepayments for their orders can get their money back through a special insurance program.
