Gossl closes: a sad chapter for Austrian traditional fashion Austrian traditional clothing company Gossl, after nearly 80 years in business, enters restructuring with over 13.6 million euros in liabilities and assets of only 2 million. Topics: Daily Life, Transport.

Since December 2022, Austrian traditional clothing company Gossl has been in the midst of financial difficulties. Employees and creditors were affected by the closure of one of its branches. After nearly 80 years of operation, Gossl had become a symbol of Austrian fashion, but now faces restructuring and reorganization.

Reasons for financial trouble

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced sales and changed consumer behavior.

Market changes and competition.

Modern consumers are increasingly demanding, and shifting fashion trends require brands to be flexible and adapt quickly. Competition has intensified, undermining the position of traditional companies like Gossl.

Financial obligations.

As of December 2024, the company’s liabilities exceeded 13.6 million euros, while assets were valued at only 2 million euros — a significant gap that contributed to the bankruptcy.

Restructuring process

As part of the restructuring, two entities — Gossl GmbH (production) and Gossl Gwand GmbH (sales) — were merged. Gossl GmbH is closing, while Gossl Gwand GmbH will continue operations. This decision aims to preserve jobs and minimize financial losses.

Around 190 creditors and 46 employees were affected by the closure of the company’s branch.

Looking ahead

Despite the difficulties, the merger and reorganization could help restore the company’s market position. Many brands have successfully adapted to changes and continued developing even during crises. The restructuring process may give new management a chance to revise sales and production strategies, regain customer interest, and restore financial flows.

The closure of Gossl marks a sad milestone for Austrian fashion. Financial difficulties caused by the pandemic and market changes have led to necessary restructuring. Whether the company can recover remains to be seen.
